The species diversity in cichlids in Lake Tanganyika has arisen through allopatric speciation, which occurs when a population is geographically isolated and evolves separately from the original population. In the case of Lake Tanganyika, the lake's complex and varied habitat has led to the formation of different isolated populations of cichlids. Over time, these isolated populations have evolved unique traits and characteristics, leading to the formation of new species. The geographical isolation and the diverse ecological niches within the lake have allowed for the rapid diversification of cichlids through allopatric speciation. **

For a Tanganyika aquarium with shell-dwelling cichlids, it is optimal to use a fine to medium grain size of sand gravel. This type of substrate closely mimics the natural habitat of these cichlids, as they are used to living in sandy bottoms with scattered shells. The fine to medium grain size allows the cichlids to easily sift through the substrate to create and maintain their territories and also helps to prevent the shells from shifting around too much. Overall, a fine to medium grain size of sand gravel provides a suitable and natural substrate for shell-dwelling cichlids in a Tanganyika aquarium. **
